Free SHS Policy, A Failure

The Free Senior High School (SHS) policy implemented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana aimed to increase access to education and alleviate the financial burden on families. While it successfully enrolled a significant number of students, critics argue that the policy has faced numerous challenges that undermine its effectiveness. Reports of overcrowded classrooms, inadequate resources, and a shortage of qualified teachers have surfaced, leading to concerns about the quality of education being provided. Many parents and educators have expressed frustration, noting that while more students have access to SHS, the infrastructure and support systems necessary for effective learning have not kept pace with the increased enrollment.

Moreover, the policy’s financial sustainability has come under scrutiny, with questions regarding the government’s ability to maintain funding amidst other pressing economic challenges. Critics suggest that the focus on quantity over quality may result in long-term negative impacts on the educational outcomes of students. As discussions continue about the future of the Free SHS policy, it is evident that while the initiative has noble intentions, it requires a reevaluation of resources and strategies to ensure that it not only increases access but also enhances the quality of education for all Ghanaian students.
